The title can stand for many things, which would be inappropriate on this blog, but in our case, T & A stands for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. December 16th was Trent's day of surgery. We found out pretty soon after his very rough week in October, that it would be in Trent's best interest to get those huge tonsils out. Thankfully, Trent did great! As with everything, he conquered this and is doing great! The hardest part for him had been the anticipation of knowing it was coming but not what to expect. Since the hospital stay was so traumatic and on the heels of so many scary things (shots, finger pricks, IV's, etc...) he really didn't know what the surgery was going to be like. And, he was imagining the worst!
Our day started at 4:50am, when that ugly alarm woke us up. (Mom and dad, I don't know how y'all get up that early Every. Single. Day.! That is way too early to be up!!) We had to be at the Surgery Center at 6am, so Deborah came over at 5:30 to stay with Rachel and Bradley. Thankfully, since Trent was the youngest patient having surgery that day, he was first on the list. (There had to be a perk somewhere, right?!) Trent's anxiety level was pretty high and he was just downright scared. Nick and I were ready for it to be over too. We felt bad that our poor baby had been through so much and had to worry about so many things. We just wanted our tough little guy to be a content and worry-free 5 year old! He went back to surgery and was done in 20 minutes. Then, Dr. Norris came out to tell us that Trent had done great and that it was over! And, he said his tonsils were very large. (No surprise there!) We were able to see him about 15 minutes later and got to see our cutie coming out of his very groggy state. He was like a little zombie and he kept trying to sit up and he was really rubbing his nose and face HARD! We tried to keep him from making huge scratches all over his face. The anesthesia had dried out his nose and made him feel itchy and uncomfortable. We sure were glad to see our boy and know that the surgery was OVER!!! He sipped some water and then fell back asleep.
After he woke up, he ate a popsicle and felt pretty good!
He got to take home this cool surgical anesthesia mask and he loved showing us how it is used. He also uses it on his stuffed animals when they have to have surgery.
After a 2 hour stay to make sure that Trent wasn't going to get sick or have any other issues, we were able to go home. Our tiny boy was finally wheeled out in this gigantic wheel chair! The nurse couldn't find a small or normal sized one, so he got this one. We thought he looked funny and adorable in it!!
We drove home and Trent really felt great! He ate normally that day--his favorite chick fil a, played a lot and watched lots of tv. Thankfully he felt good that first day, because the next 7 days were really painful! We were a little surprised that the pain lasted that long and was that intense. We kept Trent on a consistent pain medicine regimen and he did a lot of resting and watching tv and playing wii.
Thank the Lord that we are thru with this surgery! We are so thankful for our precious boy's good health!
